All they want to do is play soccer. When the opportunity presented itself they grabbed it with both hands. Never a lack of enthusiasm, soccer skills and the will power to win.
We were allowed to enter a team into the Southern Suburbs Christian League that plays its games at Chucker Road Lansdowne. Definitely under dogs, no soccer gear, does not even look the part, the boys took the field with only their skill and love for the game to see them thru.
This all changed soon after the results of our first game, yes we won and we became the talk about town. Sadly after returning from our second game, see picture above, one of our players were brutally gunned down [boy with blue and white stripe T-shirt]. This was definitely a major setback for the team and the community of St Montegu Village. Two weeks later the boys were back on the pitch and dedicated the game to “Kalie”. The team soon became the team to watch in the league and soon we mustered some spectators to watch our games. Things soon turned a bit nasty as one could see that the tension of wanting to win and expectation placed by themselves to win took its toll. They regrouped and after many team talks and ironing out personal differences they were back on track playing the beautiful game.
They did not win the league but our boys definitely made their mark. Many lessons were learnt characters reshaped and new friendships fostered.
WE ENDED THE LEAGUE IN 9TH POSITION OUT OF THE 15 TEAMS THAT PARTICIPATED.
